Now you can super glue an item in the field to fix the latent prints so they won't get damaged in shipment to the lab. As you know, a bottle rolling around in a bag can damage possible latent prints on the bottle. HotShot is designed to use in both the field as well as in the lab. With any super glue processing method you need between 70% and 80% humidity in the chamber. HotShot supplies its own heat and humidity for the optimum print development. You will need your own fuming chamber. By setting off a HotShot in a chamber the size of a 10-gallon aquarium, the humidity can be raised from 53% to 78%.
NOTE: Do not use the HotShot if the humidity is higher than 80%. This could ruin your latent prints with too much moisture.
The HotShot unit consists of a plastic container with an Activator packet, HotShot heat canister and vial of print developer. To use the HotShot, first remove everything from the plastic HotShot container. Empty the contents of the Activator packet back into the container (Fig. 1). The amount of activator solution will determine how hot it will get. Using ½ to ¾ of the activator packet will give you more durable prints. The membrane on the bottom of the HotShot heat canister needs to be punctured with a pencil or pen to allow the activator solution to absorb. Place the HotShot heat canister into the container with the HOLE SIDE DOWN (Fig. 2). The heat canister will begin to heat up. This will take approximately 30 to 60 seconds. DO NOT TOUCH THE HEAT CANISTER. The heat canister will get very hot, however, the plastic container will not melt but will also get hot and should not be touched. Twist off the top of the vial and empty the super glue onto the top of the metal cap of the HotShot heat canister (Fig. 3). Fumes will begin when it gets to the proper temperature (Fig. 4). Make sure this is done in a well-ventilated area. The fuming process should take between 5 and 10 minutes. It is best to monitor the test print that you put in the chamber with your evidence that is being processed. After fuming is complete, allow the container to cool down and dispose of contents in an appropriate manner. If processing a vehicle, it will take three (3) HotShots to properly fume the interior. Place the HotShot container on the lid to serve as an insulator to protect the surface in the vehicle it is sitting on.
